Haines Hunter 500 Bowrider Carnival Boat Test

Words - Michael Peterson

Maybe I should lay my cards on the table first. In my business we get to test a whole range of boats, and over the past 12 months for some reason or another, we've been exposed to quite a number of 5.5 metre and upwards craft, and you do get used to the style, power and size, so, again when I knew that I had to test the Haines Hunter 5.0, with the new 90HP Honda attached, I really wasn't expecting all that much.

Of course, over the past couple of years we have come to expect anything from Haines Hunter comes with an exceptional quality and toughness stamp, and together with the Honda 4 stroke power plant, which itself has now been fully proven, what I saw was little more than fantastic.

Haines Hunter 600 Classic Boat Test

Words - Ian Macrae

THE OLD CLICHÉ that size doesn’t matter strikes a chord when we compare the performance of the Haines Hunter 600 Classic with her sister ship, the superb 650 Classic. The 600’s hull may be 1ft 6in shorter than the 650, but she loses none of the exhilarating bluewater handling and performance of the bigger boat.

In fact, some might say her performance is slightly better, because the hull is 150kg lighter. She doesn’t need as much power to propel her, or tow her for that matter.
Theoretically, the 600 should be more fuel efficient at sea and while on the road, tow vehicle fuel costs should be marginally lower. Especially when you consider the 600’standem trailer, which is 100kg lighter than the one under the 650 models.

Haines Hunter vs Whittley vs Mustang (BoatPoint)

Words - BoatPoint.com.au

While the Whittley and the Haines Hunter as presented to us can be compared side by side, it would be unfair to make straight comparisons with the Mustang because the boat had nowhere near the amount of gear on board that the other two had. And, as tested, it was some $35,000 cheaper than the Whittley and $30,000 cheaper than the Haines Hunter. That's some dollars, but once you start adding things like a gas cooker ($387), full camper covers ($2722) and rocket launcher ($1815) plus any more of the 20-plus options available, then the price is going to quickly get closer to the other boats.

Haines Hunter 800 Patriot (BoatPoint)

Words - Rick Huckstepp

The Patriot’s hull was purposefully overbuilt to provide the buyer with a strong and robust sea-going boat. The manufacturer says that the glass lay up on the bottom of the hull near the keel line is 50mm thick, with three layers of mat included.

Certainly the tap test on the corners of the hull indicated that it was rock hard and certainly strong enough to put it in the class of one of the strongest built fibreglass boats in this category on the market today.
